How many chairs can one kid have?

Looking around my living room this morning I realized just how many chairs Caitlyn has. Each one was a gift and each one serves a great purpose.

From Great-Grandma Baribeau we have the playmat. I use this when Caitlyn is in a quiet but alert mood and also when she's sleepy but I don't want to put her upstairs in her crib to lay down.

We also have the vibrating chair from cousins Deb and Tom. This chair is awesome for our morning play sessions. Caitlyn is at her best in the morning and this is the chair she sits in while I do my best to entertain her and make her laugh.

Speaking of laughing she gave her very first laughs last Friday and Saturday. She loves her rattle that cousin Yolanda gave her before she was even born. I made her laugh by playing with it.

The next chair on the never ending list is a swing that we got last weekend from our friends Ian and Lynn. This swing has been awesome so far. It kept her quiet while I had dinner and it was used this morning while I showered. It is great!!

and last but not least... the bumbo chair. I've just introduced her to it and so far so good. Once she gets just a bit more head control I'm sure she'll be in it all the time. Thanks Grandpa John and Grandma Patty.

Notice how she's always leaning to the right.. not sure what that's about but I'll bet only the smartest babies must do it :)

the shirt says it all

It's a crappy rainy day outside today but with Caitlyn at home with me it's a happy day anyway :)

Have a great one!!

Pretty in red

Today was a fun day with Caitlyn!

With summer on the horizon and hot weather already here I thought it would be cute to paint Caitlyn's toenails. The first foot went relatively smoothly, she slept through the whole experience. The second foot on the other hand was a bit of a challenge as Caitlyn woke up and started moving. Eventually I had some success.

For some reason Brock wasn't overly impressed that I painted her toenails. But it doesn't matter because I think they are adorable.

The first attempt at painting her nail once she woke up.

She seemed pretty happy with the finished results

Caitlyn is finally smiling more, I managed to capture a couple on camera today.

More smiling

Brock calls this the puke face. She spit up immediately after I took this picture.

Until next time...

Happy May 24 Weekend!!

This weekend was the first May 24 that we've have stayed home for in years. After a bunch of travel over the last couple of weeks we thought it would be good to hang out in London and relax for the long weekend. What a great idea that was!!

It is amazing what a weekend of relaxation can do for your mood. It started Thursday for me with a lovely manicure and pedicure. It was great to just sit back and be pampered for an hour. I could definitely use that more often (hint hint Brock).

Then I came home to this...

Caitlyn flipping me the bird

Yes, that is my daughter giving me the finger. Maybe I had something spicy that she didn't like or perhaps she would have preferred that I had chocolate cake for dinner. Either way I still love her even if she decides to flip me the bird every once and a while.

I headed out to the camper for an afternoon visit. I love being by the lake it is so relaxing and fun. Eventually I'll have my own camper out there but for now really appreciate being able to use my parent's.

I think I might have made it in the bad books this weekend. I wouldn't let anyone wake Caitlyn up when I got there. I just think its best not to wake a sleeping baby, she's in a much better mood when allowed to wake up on her own. Little did I know she would sleep for almost the entire visit.

Luckily she got hungry so Grand-ma got her chance for a little Caitlyn cuddle.

Caitlyn is very lucky to have not just grandparents but great-grandparents as well. Her great-grandma Baribeau really loves her already and also got her turn to cuddle with Caitlyn.

and of course how could we go without a generations picture

Today was Caitlyn's 2 month birthday.

It started with a nap.

and ended with her first trip to Springbank park

loving the sunglasses

Trying to pose Caitlyn in the tree didn't work out that great. She's so patient with me sometimes.

My brother Shawn and his fiancee Jeannette were with us in the park. Normally these two are too busy annoying each other to take nice pictures. Luckily I was able to capture this one from behind.

ah true love

Overall this weekend was a success. I hope you all also had an amazing long weekend!

What a difference

It's amazing how much Caitlyn has grown in the last 8 weeks. It seems like she's getting bigger by the day.

Caitlyn the day she was born and 8 weeks later

Her first time in the car seat at 2 days old compared to 8 weeks old.

Her first time in the chair, she was way to small. She fits it much better now.

We spent our first night away from home this past weekend. For one night I packed an entire suitcase for her. It's ridiculous how much stuff a baby needs for one night. I had 8 outfits (she's been a puker lately) 8 receiving blankets (again for the puking), 18 Fuzzibunz diapers, 4 pairs of socks, a portable bed, a portable play mat and her Beco baby carrier.  I think I might have over done it a little but you just never know.

The weekend was very busy but also very fun! We went to 2 birthday parties and a baby shower. Caitlyn got to spend time with her grandparents and met her great-grandma Leeson. Overall it was a pretty successful first weekend away from home.

Its time for me to get back out and enjoy the sunshine!! Have a great day!

Kisses are the best!

Now that Caitlyn is 7 weeks old you can really see a difference from when she was born. She's more alert and stays awake for longer periods of time. She makes a ton of funny noises and just loves to cuddle with mom.

I was saying to a girlfriend the other day that what makes being a mom worth it is the cuddles. Without the cuddling all that's left right now is crying, puking, pooping and of course no sleep. The cuddles are the reward for all of the not so nice jobs a parent has to do on a daily basis.

The greatest thing Caitlyn has learned so far is to give me kisses when she's sitting with me chest to chest. She will actually push up on my arms with her legs to get closer to my face and then taps my cheek with her mouth. It's the most adorable thing.

I hope you enjoy the little video showing off Caitlyn's kisses.

As she gets older I'm sure there will be other wonderful things that make being a mom worth it, her first real smile is something I'm really looking forward to. I've been getting the gassy ones for a while but I want a genuine happy to see me smile. I can't wait for that!! For now, I'm going to enjoy all of the cuddling while it lasts.

What makes being a mom worth it to you???

My 1st Mother's Day

First of all, happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there. Especially to my mom, step-mom and mother in law, even though I didn't see you all this mother's day you were definitely in my thoughts!

Wow, my first mother's day as a mom. I wanted it to be special, after all it was my first, and boy was it ever!

Me and my little girl

The day started with Brock feeding Caitlyn a bottle of breast milk that I had prepared just for the occasion and I got to sleep in just a little bit longer which was great!! Then it was coffee in bed and cuddling with my two favorite people.

Brock brought home a beautiful bouquet of flowers and the most amazing card ever! As I read it I could feel the tears coming but managed to hold them back. It started like this:
I love the life we share. To have you as my wife is a wonderful feeling, but to see you as a mother and to share the experience of being a parent with you makes me happier that I could have ever imagined...

the beautiful mother's day bouquet and card

We spent the day together, our little family, and it was exactly as I had hoped it would be. We relaxed and went to Chapters/Starbucks and then for a drive to Port Stanley. Next was dinner, on the menu: bbq'd salmon for me and chicken for Brock along with tofu stir fry. It was wonderful. We finished off the day watching The Blind Side, an amazing choice for  mother's day. I definitely recommend this movie it was beautifully done.

What really made this day so perfect was that we got to spend so much time together just enjoying each other. It was one of the only days since Caitlyn's birth that we focused just on us as a family.

I love being a mom! When I look at Caitlyn I know that every challenge and frustration I have or will experience is worth it. I can only hope for my sake and hers that I can be as good a mom as my own mother.

My very favorite part of my first mother's day was toward the very end. I went upstairs to get Caitlyn from her crib to feed her. As I reached down to get her she looked at me and reached her two little arms up, as if to say "pick me up Mom, I've missed you".  Amazing!!

I love being a Mom!

Here are a few more mother/daughter photos to enjoy.

Enjoy your day!!

Things that make you go ah...

Caitlyn does this funny thing when she's hungry that had Brock calling her the milk monster since she was born. She will shake her head and growl as I'm trying to latch her on to feed her. It really is the cutest thing.

Every now again the cute Milk Monster turns into the angry Milk Monster.

 Feed me, Feed me now

What I absolutely love about being a mom is that in a matter of minutes, with nothing more than the milk I made myself, I can turn Caitlyn from a crying Milk Monster to a happy baby with the most amazing look of satisfaction. If there's one thing that will keep me breastfeeding longer it's moments like this:

total satisfaction

It sure is a powerful thing to be able to sooth your baby using nothing but yourself. You hear people talk about how breastfeeding is a bonding experience for mother and child and it is so true. I wouldn't want to feed her any other way. The satisfied look on her face makes the pain and frustration of those early weeks of learning to breastfeed fade into the background. Sort of how you forget the pain of labor right after she's born, well almost forget.

Cuddle time is so special right now. I really enjoy just sitting on the coach with Caitlyn laying on me cooing away or sleeping. I keep thinking that its not going to last, she's growing so fast that it seems like she'll be a toddler before I know it. But for now I'm going to get as much cuddle time in as I can.

her favorite position of the moment

Bath time is another ah moment in the Metcalfe house. The bath routine is all Brock's and he really enjoys it. He's always talking about how strong she is getting and the difference he notices with every bath. When he washes her back she actually uses her legs to stand and support herself, with his help of course. Brock is such an amazing father, never shying away from the challenge of caring for her, whether its taking on bath duty, changing messy diapers or just soothing her when she's upset. He's always up for the task.

Enjoying bath time

All clean

Right now Caitlyn is upstairs sleeping in her crib. It's only the third or fourth time she's been in it since she was born. Watching her sleep, no matter where that happens to be always makes me go ah.

Sweet dreams sweetheart
I've heard having something that smells like Mom beside the baby helps them sleep better. Hence my green shirt by her head.

That's all I have for ah moments for now although I'm sure there will be plenty more to come. Have a wonderful day!

until next time...

Playing catch-up

Who knows when the right time to start a blog is or what the first post should be? I'm not really sure myself, but since this is a blog about my family I thought it would be a good idea to start with a snapshot of how our family came to be.

I met Brock at CountryStyle Donuts in 1997. He and his friends used to come for coffee while I worked. We became great friends and in 2001 started our relationship.

8 years later, we were married.
 April 11th, 2009

We decided to start our family shortly after we were married and I became pregnant in July 2009. My due date was April 24th, 2010.

1st Ultrasound - 9 weeks 3 days

I loved being pregnant. I was one of those lucky women you hear about, no morning sickness and didn't get overly big and uncomfortable.

 32 weeks

Caitlyn surprised us by coming into the world 5 weeks early. After 13.5 hours of labor and 2.5 hours of pushing, she was born March 23rd, 2010 at 5:38pm. She weighed 6lbs 1oz and was 18inches long.

Our first family photo

Caitlyn is now 6 weeks old and gets more beautiful every day. I just love spending time with her cuddling on the couch and watching her look around as she lays on her mat. She is an amazing gift and I can't wait for all of the wonderful things to come.

Well that's it for now. Hope you've enjoyed the quick look at how our family came to be.

Until next time...
