A recent nasty message from someone in my past has had me thinking about this blog and privacy for a while now so I have decided to make a couple of changes.

When I started the blog I thought nothing of including my full name in the web address thinking it would make it easier for my friends and family to find and read the blog. Lately though I've been thinking more and more about the lack of privacy that comes with having a  public blog. I LOVE that there are people that I don't know interested enough in what I write and post to read the blog. At the same time I've become concerned about my family's privacy and the paranoid mom is coming out and saying why use your full name, people can find you.

So I figure while this blog is still in its infancy I might be better off to change a couple of things, namely the web address and blog name (mostly because I wasn't that fond of the first name I chose). Content will be the same, you'll still see lots of videos and pictures of the family, I'll just be a little more conscious of the little details I include that might allow the few people out there with less than good intentions from getting too close to our family.

Thanks so much!!

Do you ever worry about online privacy and how much you share??

On a happier note here's my attempt at Christmas photos for Caitlyn, I might have to have a reshoot or two.

Gotta love the red diapers!

Let the countdown begin

'Tis the season...

I love this time of year. The family get togethers, the lights, the celebrations, gift giving. It's a beautiful season full of so much meaning and joy.

Christmas is coming and I'm getting into the spirit already.

Online Misunderstandings

It's funny how you can post something online and mean one thing but others have a completely different understanding and the rumours start.

Yesterday I posted this status update on Facebook

My friend Todd got it

Melissa did not

Then the phone calls came:

"Is everything okay? We were worried."

So we posted a couple of clarifications:

The Yellow Light Of Death is an issue with the Playstation 3 system that basically kills it. It can be fixed by Sony for $200 or it can be fixed at home with a guarantee that it will probably break again and again.

For us it was a very sad day, after 3 years it died right in the middle of Caitlyn's Baby Einstein movie. What makes me sadder still is that because Brock just had to have the thing when it first came out he paid over $600 for it. That's $200 per year for a game :(

So lesson for next time, when making status updates, don't assume everyone knows what you're talking about.

Not so great shopping experience

A little vent if you will...

This week I won a "free" 10x13 picture from a local portrait studio. I got Caitlyn all dressed up and brought her down to get her pictures taken knowing full well that they would attempt to sell us a portrait package worth lots of $$$$.

What I didn't expect was the guilt trip that would come along with it. As you're aware we got beautiful family photos done back in September so I wasn't ready to shell out hundreds of dollars so soon. Why oh why would the sales lady make comments like "but its her first Christmas" and "she'll only have her first Christmas once" I get that the point is to sell extra pictures but really, do you have to try and make me feel bad for saying no??

To tell you the truth if the prices weren't so outrageously expensive I probably would have bought a few extra sheets but at $20 for an 8x10 or 2 5x7's I didn't feel it was worth it.

So in the end I'll enjoy my free picture and won't likely be going back again.

Ah, I feel better now.

P.S. Can you believe I've been Christmas shopping already... just a little over a month left to go.

P.P.S. A little Father-Daughter love for the weekend.

Grandma likes to give Caitlyn things, which is great because Caitlyn likes presents. She's just like her mommy that way (hint hint dear hubby).

Anyhow, Grandma has been super excited about this baby fruit feeder thing that she bought. It has a little net and you're supposed to put fruit and veggies inside then baby gets to eat them without the risk of choking on chunks of food.

Caitlyn had an opportunity to try it out and after some initial discomfort:

She really got the hang of it and liked it a lot. It was kind of funny to watch her go at this thing. I had stuck a small piece of frozen banana inside.

The only challenge I found with using this neat little gift was cleaning it. I found little banana pieces got stuck in the netting and were really hard to get out. I washed it, then ran it through the dishwasher then washed it again before I got it clean.  But given how much she liked it, I'm sure I'll be giving it to her again and then spending 20 minutes trying to clean it. Oh the things we do for our kids!!

Chic and Chocolate Diva Night

Lately I've been managing to get away a little bit more regularly and I have to admit it has been nice.

This weekend my girlfriend Alicia decided to throw a Chic and Chocolate Diva Night where a bunch of girls got together for a card-making workshop, some gossip and chocolate. It was a nice relaxing evening with the girls and of course the conversation steered towards labor and delivery (Alicia is expecting her first).

Our Hostess for the evening
With all these pregnant friends around Caitlyn is going to have quite the network of play dates available once she's older.

The finished product for the evening:

and lucky girl that I am (they tease me about it all the time) I won the door prize :)

What sort of things do you do to unwind and relax?

Santa Claus is coming to town

Saturday night was our town's Santa Claus Parade and I was really excited to bring Caitlyn.

The weather was warmish and the skies were clear. We had a great spot on the sidewalk with an awesome view of the street and Caitlyn was tucked in nice and warm in her stroller. Papa and Nana came up for dinner and a visit and joined us for the parade. There was Christmas music and lots of floats decked out with lights. You could really feel the Christmas spirit, it made me want to go right home, decorate the house and watch The Santa Clause movies over and over again.

It was late in the evening and I was worried Caitlyn would sleep through the entire parade. She had a little nap while we were waiting for it to start.

But once the parade started coming by she woke right up and was really interested in watching the entire thing. It made me so happy to know that she was enjoying herself.

Are you getting into the Christmas spirit?

Fun and Useful Stuff

Caitlyn is very lucky to have a Grandma that can sew. It means that she gets lots of special items that are unique and just for her. They are also practical and help make Mommy's life much easier :)

I found these great patterns online at: Jan Andrea at home on the web and asked my wonderfully talented Mom to make them for Caitlyn. She did of course because she LOVES her Grand-baby.

The Portable High-Chair
I first saw this style of high chair in use when we went for our family visit back in October. Brock's Aunt had made one for her Granddaughters and I thought it was a fabulous idea. So I went in search of a pattern to share with my mom.

If you're interested in the pattern you can find it here

The Grocery Cart Seat Cover
Caitlyn is getting much too heavy to be carted around in her infant car-seat and now that she's able to sit on her own she's big enough to ride in grocery cart seats. Being a first time mom and with cold and flu season coming I'm a lot little paranoid about the germs that are all over grocery carts. Enter the Grocery Cart Seat Cover, its fun, pretty to look at and protects my baby and my hands from touching the grocery cart handle.

If you're interested in the pattern you can find it here

Thank you so much Grandma for making these lovely gifts, they are the best!!

Lest We Forget

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
- John McCrae

Today I wanted to say THANK YOU

Thank you to all of the brave men and women who joined the military, left their families behind and fought many wars to protect their country and all those who live there.

Thank you to all those who continue to join and fight for people who cannot fight for themselves.

Thank you for making the world a better place for me to raise my daughter. Thank you for giving her the opportunity to grow up in a world where she can be free and happy.

Thank you to those who died and those who lived, you will always be remembered.

Childcare decision

This past week I've been looking a little more closely at daycare centers in our area and so far trying to find a good quality daycare seems to be pretty difficult and stressful.

There are so many things to consider when looking for a daycare:
  • Curriculum - emergent versus theme based
  • Food - mostly homemade versus canned/prepared
  • Location - close to home or close to work
  • Cloth Diapers - will they use them or not
  • Staff qualification - registered ECE's with opportunities for enhanced learning
I've done two tours so far, one of the daycare centers met all of my expectations and the other met none of them. I'm on waiting lists for both and am just hoping that I'm able to get into my number 1 choice.

What do you do when you can't get into your preferred daycare? As much as I would love to be a stay at home mom until Caitlyn is in school I just know that it can't happen. But it bothers me that she might have to spend some time in a daycare that doesn't meet my expectations while waiting for a spot to open up in my preferred center. I still have 5 months to go before I have to go back to work so here's hoping we are able to get into our 1st choice or at least find another daycare or two that meet my expectations.

On another note, I've been a little picture happy with my baby girl and have some cute photos to share. Sometimes its hard to decide which ones to post.  Caitlyn's new thing is to do this closed mouth smile. Its very sweet but I do miss my big open mouth smiles :)

Happy Friday!!

Guess who has two teeth? These aren't super new, I actually felt them the first time Oct 22nd but was waiting for them to come all the way out before posting pictures. It's been two weeks and I'm still waiting but I thought I would post a couple of pics of the mini-teeth my baby has. Question: How long does it normally take for them to come out all the way once they've started?

You'll recall a few months ago we had some teething trouble well I'm now seeing the result of all that fussiness. Both her bottom front teeth popped out at the same time, poor kid. Here are the best pictures I was able to manage. She has this bad habit of sticking her tongue out and hiding her teeth every time I try to take a picture of them.

For the baby books, did you count the day you first felt the teeth but could barely see them or the day they came through all the way as the first tooth date??

I Did It!!

After yesterday's episode of my pants falling down I was reminded of a song from the last season of American Idol - Pants on the Ground

Lucky for me, I was not looking like a fool tonight, my pants stayed up nice and snug :) I wore my lovely Lululemon capris and everything stayed where it should.

So the big news is I managed to complete the 5K run!!! Ok so it was more of a run/walk but still, do you have any idea how freaking proud I am of myself right now.

Here's my new baseline time for the challenge: 5km - 42:08min

A little recap of my run,  I'm recapping in miles because that's how my treadmill works and the only way I can manage to remember what happened when.

Mile 1 - I actually ran this entire mile. I have NEVER run an entire mile EVER. So this was probably the highlight of my workout.
Mile 2 - After  running the first mile I was beat. So I walked a bit and then ran a bit and so on. I couldn't believe how hot it got after the first mile. I kept feeling like I was overheating. Lesson for next time - pick a treadmill that sits directly in front of a fan.
Mile 3 - OMG I'm tired, OMG I'm hot, OMG I'm itchy - this went on and on, I still managed to run probably half of this mile but I definitely was shortening up the intervals.

The last 0.30 mile of my run was probably my strongest. Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall came on the ipod and I was inspired by the chorus:

Suddenly I see
This is what I wanna be
Suddenly I see
Why the hell it means so much to me

What I want to be is healthy and why does it mean so much to me? Caitlyn of course, I got thinking about how important it was to me that I'm healthy for my daughter not only to set a good example but also so that I can play and run and laugh with her when she's older. With that in mind I ran that last leg of my 5k and it felt GOOD!

Side note: I had no idea it was normal to get itchy legs when exercising after a long period of inactivity. Apparently my capillaries collapsed during my no exercise period and so their expanding caused me to be itchy. From what I've googled this should go away once I get working out more regularly but still, very annoying.

For those of you who come here solely to see pictures of the lovely Caitlyn here's your treat.

Love this outfit!!

My sweet happy girl

Setting goals

I have been struggling for a while with my health, and weight in particular, since I had Caitlyn. My struggle goes between not liking how I'm feeling/looking and getting the motivation to commit to doing something about it.

I find it difficult to get away to the gym in the evening when Brock is home to watch Caitlyn because I don't want to just hand her over right when he gets home from work and by the time she goes to bed I'm so tired that I no longer have the motivation to go.

Well that changes today (hopefully). My Fabulous Cousin has issued a challenge and I accepted. The goal is to run 5k and then improve the time over the month of November.

This is actually a really great challenge for me as I've aspired to run for a long time but have just never got out there consistently enough to get good at it.

Tonight I hit the gym when Brock got home from work in order to run the 5k and get my baseline time.  That was a fail challenge. In total I ran .98 miles - 1.5km in 13:48 min. Not bad for my first time and I'm confident I would have completed the full 5km had it not been for one annoying thing. My pants kept falling down! Yes, that's right I wore the wrong pants for a run and every 20 sec or so was stuck hiking them up or else all the ladies on the elliptical machines behind me would have gotten quite the show. After almost 14 minutes of pulling my pants up and knowing at my pace I would have at least another 20 minutes of this I decided to throw in the towel for the night.

I'm going to find a different pair of pants and try again tomorrow.

On the bright side - at least I made it to the gym :)
