Merry Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time for creating new traditions which we're definitely doing this year. Caitlyn is so excited for Christmas and is really getting the concept.

We had the most wonderful Christmas Eve, just our little family and I can't wait for more years like this to come.

Leaving you with some pictures of how we spent our day.

We started with an attempt at getting some nice shots in front of the tree. Even with a tripod they're still blurry because getting a 21 month old to sit still in front of the tree and smile is next to impossible. Nonetheless we had fun!!

We moved onto baking cookies for Santa, she had a lot of fun doing this activity. I think we'll be doing a lot of baking together as she grows up.

Then we went back to the Christmas tree and tried again.  I love this picture of the two of us, it made it fun for her as I was using the self-timer and she got all excited while I hurried to get us into place.

After dinner we went out for a bit to look at Christmas lights. She gets so excited to see the lights. We went down to a local park that has some great displays and then stopped at a house in our neighborhood that was decked out!  So much fun :)

Once we got home it was time to get ready for Santa. We wrote him a note and set out the cookies and milk. I sure hope he likes it!!

Soon enough it'll be time for bed and the start of a very busy week will be here. But before that, I wanted to wish you all a very happy holiday season and an awesome Christmas!

Best wishes!

Happy Fall!

Things I like about fall:
  • Pretty colors
  • Crisp sweater weather
  • Apple Picking
  • Halloween

Things I don't like about fall:
  • Scraping my windshields
  • Shorter days
  • Pre-Christmas shopping
  • Week long illness of the disgusting poopy type

The last item I'm sure isn't reserved for fall but since it's the first time Caitlyn has experienced it I'm just going with it. Luckily she seems to all better now and back to her normal poopy self.

Can you believe Halloween just passed and it's only been two posts since the last time she wore this costume. The weeks are flying by fast and before I know it the holidays will be here. But in the meantime, lets talk Fall.

We went apple picking.

Then came Halloween.

Even though Caitlyn was still a bit under the weather we took her out Trick or Treating.  It was a lot of fun and she did so well. She practiced her "trick or treats" all the way down the street walked up to the door and waited for someone to answer. Then...

crickets....

she refused to say "trick or treat" to the person who answered the door. On the bright side she did say "tank you" when she was given a treat and eventually she said trick or treat to one lady that we had been talking with for a few minutes.

at one point Caitlyn was dragging her candy bucket down the street and Brock tried to help her by carrying it for her. Big Mistake! As soon as he took that bucket she lost her mind, full on crying tried to throw herself to the ground.

Lesson of the day?? Don't try to help unless you ask her first and she says yes, otherwise Look Out!

Well, that's it for now but I do hope to be back again soon!

Happy Fall Everyone!

Caitlyn Meets her Granddad

We're on VACATION!! Well it's more of a staycation with a bit of travel here and there.  But the best part...

Caitlyn got to meet her Granddad and Bern from England.  Brock's Dad lives in England and is here vising for a couple of weeks. Caitlyn finally had an opportunity to meet him although she has talked to him over the phone some over the past few months.

It took a couple of days but she totally warmed up to him. I was really happy that she was finally able to meet her Granddad.

We visited this great conservation area that actually had a replica of a Longhouse Village that some First Nations people used to live in. Very cool stuff!

Caitlyn walked around with her Granddad and Bern.

She checked out an awesome tree that was full of fall colors.

Near the end of the visit, Caitlyn and Granddad went out to play in our backyard and I caught some great pics.

We're planning on using Skype to help Caitlyn keep in touch once they go back to England, hopefully she can handle sitting in front of the computer on camera with touching any buttons. Wishful thinking? Probably :)

Parenting Pet Peeves

Are there pet peeves that as a parent you find yourself going a little crazy over.

I can think of a few for myself, things that immediately get under my skin or I just can't have happen.

Here are a few examples..

Cheerios:
I refuse to buy Cheerios for Caitlyn. This cereal is touted as the perfect toddler snack with its little O shaped morsels and quick melting goodness. The thing they don't talk about is the 17 ingredients many of which I can't even pronounce, what is tocopherols anyway?? According to Wikipedia its a form of Vitamin E, who knew?!

What I do buy for her is Organic Whole O's Cereal. Same O shape, 5 ingredients and I can pronounce them all. Of course, my enunciation of pomegranate may leave some people questioning that statement.

On the flip side, I let her eat Cheezies, that have 30 ingredients (now that I've actually counted it might be the last time she gets them), many of which I cannot pronounce. Now why would I let her eat Cheezies and not Cheerios...

Well, she got the Cheezies because she dressed up like the cutest Strawberry ever of course... Moms this makes total sense right???

Next on my list:  Her Name

I can't stand it when anyone calls her anything but Caitlyn and tend to immediately correct anyone who does without even thinking about it. Kate, Kattie, Cat, whenever I hear any of those names in reference to my daughter it's like nails on a chalkboard. Not that those are terrible names, or even nicknames, they just aren't MY kid's name.  Brock and I struggled a bit to find a name that we both loved. Now that we have our little Caitlyn, I want keep her Caitlyn.

Same goes for the spelling of her name. Yes, I realize there's a dozen different ways to spell Caitlyn. However if you're someone who should know how to spell it the right way and doesn't, you can expect a not so subtle reminder that's its a C and a Y in Caitlyn. I just can't help myself, drives me crazy.

How could you call this sweet girl anything but her beautiful given name? She really is a Caitlyn, through and through.

Television:

Can't live with it, can't live without it

I felt vindicated today, when this news story came out. Spongebob Square Pants is a bad T.V. show. Not only does it have inappropriate content that really shouldn't be in a kids show, it's bad for kids concentration. According to a study, the fast moving show "causes short-term attention problems in preschoolers". Good thing we only allow the tried and true Baby Einstein and Treehouse TV in our home. As annoying as Caillou is, at least he doesn't ruin my kids attention span.

Another study came out recently that stated a bit of the obvious to me: Kids who watch nighttime or violent shows have trouble sleeping. My first thought was: Really, you needed to study this to realize that shows that have lots of violence and scary stuff, give kids nightmares. Why am I not surprised??

On the bright side, I have more to back me up in my rule that Video Games aren't allowed while Caitlyn's awake.

Who wants to give this innocent little girl nightmares and bad grades?? Not me that's for sure.

What is important to me is not necessarily important to everyone which is what makes parenting such a unique experience from family to family.  What are your parenting pet peeves??

Randomness

I tried to write this post using my phone a few days ago while coloring my hair.  It was almost done when I tried to paste in a link and deleted all of my  ranting well thought out prose. So needless to say I'm now posting from my computer where I'll be a little less likely to mess it up.

This summer has been so incredibly busy! When I look back at the past couple of months everything is a blur. We had an amazing summer and really enjoyed getting to spend time with our friends and family. My only regret is that I hardly picked up my SLR camera which is really unfortunate. Caitlyn's first year I took so many pictures but since returning to work I've hardly picked up my camera at all. Can we say Mommy Fail! On the bright side I've captured some great moments using the phone and that is where the pictures you're seeing today come from.

We spent a lovely morning with our cousins Leah and Yolanda and actually got to meet our twitter friend Kelly. It was a great morning and we had so much fun. Too bad Caitlyn wouldn't take a bit of a nap and we had to cut our visit a little short. Here she is about 10 seconds after getting in the car that day.

Caitlyn's been feeding herself more and more these days. She's so proud when she does while I'd rather not deal with the mess.  There should be some sort of warning label on children.

Warning: I will make you love me so much that you'll even put up with my big messes while I learn and grow.

We went to a wedding this past weekend. I tried to get a nice close up of Caitlyn in her dress. She had the cutest little flower in her hair. However she was uncooperative and this is as good as it got. She looks so grown up walking with her daddy. Have I mentioned that she's walking full time now :) Whoo hoo!!
